Cybersecurity & Data Privacy: The Fight Against Financial Crime

Financial crimes in cyberspace result in more significant monetary losses than the entire global illicit drug trade, highlighting the severe impact of hacking and data breaches on both finances and reputations. Instances of personal data being sold on the dark web and compromises involving millions of business users further underscore the urgency of robust cybersecurity measures.

A key feature of the programme is a case study on a historic outage caused by a faulty software update from CrowdStrike, a leading cybersecurity company renowned for its proactive approach to threat intelligence.  This incident, which disrupted major sectors of the global economy, left travelers stranded at airports, patients waiting in hospitals, and customers cash-strapped in front of banks. The update, affecting millions of computers running Microsoft Windows, serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in our digital infrastructure.

Additionally, the rise in cyberattacks on digital assets introduces new risks for users drawn into the market by promising yet hazardous protocols. The programme explores the various types of financial crime, detection methods, and prevention strategies, while emphasizing the need for collaboration between government, the private sector, and consumers. As cyberattacks continue to impact revenue, brand reputation, and consumer trust, this programme is both timely and essential for advancing cybersecurity awareness and effective oversight.

Programme Objective

This programme will provide insights into the latest trends and challenges facing data protection and cybersecurity, particularly considering the worrying increase of financial crimes in recent years. The programme will deliberate the issues, tools and techniques deployed to address and combat the financial crime prevalent in cyber space.
