Dissecting Environmental Factors in Sustainability Investments

The growth of sustainable investing in the past decade has forced companies to focus on ESG issues and move from only profit maximisation to considerations of nature, people, and planet. Environmental issues have been at the forefront with Malaysia pledging to achieve net-zero emissions as early as 2050. In order to halt climate change, carbon impact needs to be addressed. For businesses, what specific actions need to be taken to chart a carbon neutral future? This programme will focus on the environmental factors that are particularly important to Malaysia which will have an impact on organisations as environmental concerns take the lead among sustainability focused investors.

The plantation sector is considered Malaysia’s focus area as the world’s second largest palm oil producer and exporter, accounting for 25% of world production and 34% of world exports in 2020. Over the last few years, the palm oil industry has increasingly been associated with deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and overreliance on foreign labour. What would be some of the strategies of plantation companies to alleviate these issues and contribute towards the country’s goal of a net zero future?

The recent supply chain crisis has triggered our focus on food security with increasing urbanisation and rising temperatures leading to land scarcity. Beyond guarding population health, food security also brings about sustained economic growth and positive impact on human capital. Similarly, sustainable water management is critical to our health and prosperity and climate change has brought about vulnerabilities to our water systems. Industries and consumers alike have a part to play on efficient water management as part of Malaysia’s climate action efforts.

Likewise, greener building and cities reduce the vast amounts of emissions and waste into the environment. At the current pace of urbanisation, future and existing cities need to employ smart technologies and design elements that leads to lower resource use and pollution to build resilience against future climate impacts.

The business case for environmental sustainability is apparent as investors are putting more pressure on companies and their board of directors to pay closer attention to the sustainability and long-term viability of their business and environment.
