IIC – SIDC Governance Convention 2019: Rising Beyond Principles And Policies

As economies face challenges of unsettling international trade disputes, geopolitical nationalism, disruptive technologies and climate change corporate leaders seek out strategic collaborative partnerships to ensure future resilience, business change adaptability and long-term sustainability. Most corporate leaders know that taking this approach requires a forward looking mind-set to invest with cautious optimism in future-growth businesses that has strong performance potential and sound governance practices.

Institutional investors in capital markets are committed in their role to influence the standard of good governance practices among investee businesses. Active stewardship ensures investee businesses develop and observe the best governance principles, policies, processes and practices. Institutional investors help to ensure capital markets function as economic future-growth engines. They help improve price discovery, liquidity, allocative efficiency, transparency and most importantly corporate accountability.

However, like all investors, institutional investors also depend on the assurance of a level playing field, access to timely, reliable information, and the ability to exercise their rights as shareowners. For the proper functioning of our capital markets, both corporate leaders and institutional investors themselves realise the need to step up the manner in which they discharge their stewardship roles and rise beyond principles and policies.
